Monument To The Shoeshiner

2013 - present – In this action, I approach shoeshiners and offer to pay them for a shine, but request that I do the shining. I am gradually becoming more adept at shining shoes as a result of their instruction. This is the latest in a series of monuments to the people who put food on their families tables through the kind of work that has traditionally been looked down upon in stratified societies. Growing out of the humble shoe shine box of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the monumental throne customers sit in while getting their shoes shined in airports, train stations and hotels in the US is used in this action to uplift the person who is normally at the feet of their customers.
